7 Month & Older Rio Grande Wild Turkey Hens
Our 7 Month & Older Rio Grande Wild Hen Turkeys are the true foundation of any successful wildlife restoration project. At this fully mature stage, these hens are biologically prepared for the spring nesting season and possess the elite survival instincts required for life in the Texas brush. Featuring the classic, beautifully mottled brown and tan plumage that provides perfect natural camouflage, these hens are fast, alert, and entirely self-sufficient. Whether you are looking to expand an existing flock or provide mates for your Toms, these ranch-hardened hens are ready to produce.
Why Choose a Mature Hen?
- Spring Nesting Ready: At 7 months and older, these hens are fully mature and will actively participate in the upcoming spring breeding and egg-laying season.
- Flock Expansion: Wild turkey Toms thrive with a "harem" of multiple hens. Adding mature hens is the fastest way to increase your flock's annual egg production and poult survival rate.
- Master Camouflage & Survival: Unlike the flashy Toms, hens rely on their incredible camouflage and "freezing" instincts to evade predators. These older birds have mastered these survival skills.
- Instant Foraging Impact: As aggressive foragers, mature hens spend their days constantly sweeping the ground for grasshoppers, ticks, beetles, and weed seeds, making them highly effective for natural pasture management.
Habitat & Nesting Management
- Pre-Spring Nutrition: As spring approaches, transition these hens to a 16% poultry layer pellet and offer free-choice oyster shell. The extra calcium is critical for strong eggshells and healthy embryo development.
- Nesting Cover is Key: To keep hens on your property during the spring, you must provide optimal nesting habitat. They prefer to lay their eggs in thick brush, fallen treetops, or stands of tall native bunchgrass (like Little Bluestem) near a clearing.
- Roosting Habits: While they nest on the ground, they still require tall, sturdy trees to safely roost at night during the non-nesting season.
Best Use Cases
- Breeding Program Enhancement: The smartest investment for landowners looking to dramatically multiply their wild turkey population in a single season.
- Flock Balancing: Perfect for correcting the male-to-female ratio on your property if you currently have an abundance of Toms.
- Conservation & Restoration: Introducing pure-strain, ranch-raised Rio Grande hens ensures that the poults hatched on your land have the best possible native genetics.
Logistics & Expert Handling
- Secure Transport Required: While smaller than the Toms, mature hens are incredibly agile and powerful flyers. You must bring a professional poultry crate or secure, well-ventilated pet carrier. They will easily escape an open box.
- Bulk Harem Discounts: We offer reduced pricing if you are purchasing multiple hens to build a harem for a Tom. Contact us directly for group rates.
- Texas Delivery Available: To reduce stress on these future mothers, take advantage of our personal delivery service within 100 miles of our Liberty Hill ranch.
