5-7 Week Transition Phase

Our 5-7 week old Rio Grande Wild Turkeys represent the ultimate 'ready-to-go' bird. At this stage, they are fully feathered juveniles that have outgrown the brooder and are ready for life in a flight pen or large outdoor enclosure. These birds have survived the most vulnerable stages of development and are now robust, athletic, and incredibly alert. They are at the perfect age to imprint on your property, making them the premier choice for land restoration and native wildlife establishment

Why This is the "Ideal Age" for Purchase

  • Off the Heat: These birds are fully feathered and capable of regulating their own temperature. You can move them directly into a secure barn, shed, or flight pen without the need for heat lamps.
  • Property Imprinting: At 6 weeks, turkeys begin to form a strong "sense of place." By keeping them in a secure area on your property for a few weeks now, they are significantly more likely to stay nearby once fully released.
  • High-Flying Juveniles: Their wings are fully functional for short flights. They are already practicing the roosting behaviors they will use for the rest of their lives.
  • Maximum Resilience: These are the 'survivors' of our ranch-raised flock, having been hardened to Texas conditions and handled through the critical early growth phases.
  • We’ve handled the critical early-stage brooding. These birds are fully feathered, off the heat, and ready for your flight pen or soft-release program.

Care & Management (5-7 Weeks)

  • Diet Transition: While they still benefit from high protein, you can begin transitioning them to a 24-26% turkey grower feed.
  • The Roosting Instinct: At this age, a turkey that isn't roosting is a stressed turkey. Ensure they have access to sturdy roosts 4–8 feet off the ground.
  • Forage Introduction: Now is the time to introduce them to the native forage they will find on your land. Supplement their feed with local greens, seeds, and insects to sharpen their foraging skills.

Best Use Cases

  • Native Land Restoration: The gold standard for landowners looking to return the Rio Grande turkey to its natural habitat.
  • Large-Scale Pest Control: Their increased size allows them to cover more ground and consume larger pests, from grasshoppers to small scorpions and ticks.
  • Game Management: Ideal for hunting preserves or ranches looking to bolster local wild populations with high-vigor, ranch-raised stock.
  • Conservation programs
  • Personal flocks and homesteads
