3-4 Week Old Rio Grande Wild Turkeys

At 3-4 weeks old, our Rio Grande Wild Turkeys are entering their most active juvenile phase. These birds have moved past the delicate poult stage and are now vigorous, fast-growing, and highly alert. They are beginning to show their true wild character—testing their wings, establishing a social pecking order, and exhibiting the keen awareness that makes the Rio Grande strain so resilient in the Texas brush. These are the ideal 'started' birds for landowners who want to skip the high-maintenance first few weeks of brooding.

Why Choose 3-4 Week Old Birds?

  • Feathered and Hardy: At this age, they are mostly feathered and better able to regulate their own body temperature, making the transition to larger enclosures much safer.
  • High Activity & Instinct: You will see them actively foraging, jumping, and practicing short bursts of flight. Their wild instincts are fully engaged.
  • Reduced Brooding Time: They require less heat than newborns, saving you time and energy costs in the brooder.
  • Proven Vigor: These birds have successfully navigated the first month of growth on our ranch, ensuring you receive a robust and healthy flock.

Care & Transition (The Next Steps)

  • Temperature Adjustment: Gradually reduce brooder heat to 75-80°F. If the weather is warm and they are fully feathered, they may only need heat at night.
  • Growth Nutrition: Transition from a starter to a 26-28% protein turkey grower feed. They still need high protein to fuel their massive skeletal and feather development.
  • Grit is Essential: Since these birds are more adventurous eaters, you must provide poultry grit (fine gravel) to help their gizzards process feed and any supplemental greens or insects.
  • Roosting Prep: If you haven't already, provide elevated roosts. These birds want to be off the ground at night; satisfying this instinct now will make them much easier to manage as they get older.

Ideal Uses for This Age

  • Property "Soft Release" Programs: Perfect for transitioning into large outdoor flight pens for eventual release on your land.
  • Superior Pest Control: Their increased size and energy make them incredibly effective at clearing tick and grasshopper populations.
  • Flock Expansion: An easy way to add vigorous, ranch-raised genetics to an existing juvenile flock.
